She was always unwilling to let people see her vulnerable side.
Terence quietly closed the door, and in the shared darkness, they could hear each other’s breathing.
“Why did you close the door?”
Natalie hadn't expected him to close it. She had only asked him not to turn on the lights.
If he had something to say, he should say it and leave.
Why did he close the door?
“If I didn't, it might get too crowded in here. You didn't come down for dinner, and everyone wanted to come check on you.”
When Natalie hadn’t shown up for dinner, Mrs. Lockwood and the children had all wanted to rush upstairs.
Terence had told them she was in a bad mood and not to disturb her.
Otherwise, they would have been up here chattering away long ago.
As his eyes adjusted to the dark, Terence saw Natalie huddled in the corner, bathed in moonlight.
“Everyone is so concerned about me. I don’t know what I’ve done to deserve it.”
It was only after joining the Lockwood family that Natalie understood what family care felt like.
Her family of origin and the Cross family had only brought her pain.
Only the Lockwood family made her feel like she finally had a home.
But… how could the Lockwood family ever truly be her home?
A bitter feeling surged in Natalie's throat. It must have been the liquor burning its way down.
“What do you mean, ‘deserve it’? You are our family,” Terence said, a hint of irritation in his voice.
Why was she still putting herself down? Why hadn’t she accepted them as her family yet?
Hadn’t they done enough?
“I think I’m a little drunk.”
Natalie was touched that Terence called her family, but she chose to ignore the comment, not wanting to make things awkward for either of them.
There was a kind of attraction that was purely physical, and that was good enough for him.
“If you think alcohol is so great, then I’ll drink with you.”
Getting herself drunk was just giving him an opportunity.
Terence tipped his head back and chugged half the bottle. “That’s the one I was drinking from,” Natalie said in a panic. “Let me get you a new one.”
Natalie felt it was inappropriate for him to drink from her bottle and also wanted an excuse to get out of his arms.
But Terence wasn't about to let her go.
The moment she tried to stand, he pulled her back down.
This time, her head bumped hard against his chest, and she heard him let out a muffled grunt.
In the dark, charged atmosphere of the room, that sound felt like an invitation.
Natalie felt that it wasn’t just her face that was blushing anymore. The alcohol was hitting her hard, and her whole body felt like it was on fire.
