Hanley was alone in the yard watching the fish. His grandmother had told him to wait there while she spoke with his aunt.
The fish in the pond were numerous and beautiful, and Hanley was enjoying himself.
Suddenly, Marie appeared in the distance. She gave a nod to a housekeeper, who immediately walked over to Hanley.
"Whose child are you? What are you doing here?"
"I'm Hanley Cross."
Hanley spoke with a natural air of superiority.
After all, the name Cross still carried weight for him.
The housekeeper chuckled. "You mean the Cross family that just went bankrupt? You poor thing. From a trust-fund baby to a debt-ridden one. You'll probably spend your whole life trying to pay off your father's debts."
Hanley was both humiliated and furious.
"Even if my family is bankrupt, we're still better than you. You're just a housekeeper."
"My, what a sharp tongue. You'd better stay away from that pond. Those are prized Arowana fish, each worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. They're worth a lot more than you are. Heh."
The housekeeper's mockery enraged Hanley.
Ever since his family went bankrupt, so many people had looked down on him. Now even a housekeeper dared to laugh at him.
"Get out! Get away from me!"
"Oh my, such a little boy with such a big temper. Do you think this is still your family's estate? Let me be clear, the Cross family is bankrupt. This is the Ward family estate. You should learn some manners, child!"
Hanley was about to lose his mind. Did his family's bankruptcy mean anyone could bully him?
