Marie's words managed to quell some of Victoria's anger.
That was more like it. The nerve of her, suggesting her son should marry into her family.
The moment the Cross Group went bankrupt, she wanted to stomp all over them. As his mother, Victoria would never allow that to happen.
"Marie, I'm sorry. I misunderstood you just now. I apologize. I knew you weren't the type to be ungrateful. You and Darren are truly in love. It's wonderful that you're out now. You and Darren can finally be together openly."
At this, Marie's expression soured.
She'd been out for two days, and Darren hadn't even come to see her.
He clearly didn't consider her his wife.
"Mother, Darren still hasn't come to see me. He must still have feelings for Natalie. Maybe you should just convince him to get back together with her."
Victoria immediately became anxious. "Impossible! Marie, you're overthinking it. You have no idea what happened. When the Cross Group went bankrupt, Natalie showed up with some other man to mock and belittle us. Darren saw her ugly true colors. There's no way he could have any feelings left for her."
"Is that so? Natalie brought another man to mock you? She certainly is bold."
"She humiliated Darren. He'll never forgive her in his life, so how could he still be hung up on her? You're his true love."
Marie gave Victoria a smile that didn't reach her eyes.
She knew that if she openly expressed her disdain for the now-bankrupt Cross family, Victoria would raise hell, telling everyone that Marie had instructed her to cause the scene at the hospital in an attempt to kill Marcus Ward.
For now, she would have to tolerate this old hag.
"Mother, if Darren really has no feelings for Natalie, I will definitely help him rebuild the Cross Group. It's just not the right time yet."
