Marie tried to harm her, but it was a wasted effort. Fate was on her side.

At the hospital.
Natalie had been working for two days and two nights straight. The procedure was incredibly risky, a complex and dangerous one that required constant monitoring. She was terrified something might go wrong.
Just then, Mrs. Lockwood rushed in. “Natalie, something terrible has happened! You’ve been set up!”
Seeing Mrs. Lockwood’s panicked expression, Natalie asked, “What happened? Don’t worry, just tell me slowly. What do you mean, ‘set up’?”
“Damn it, damn it all!”
Mrs. Lockwood was so furious she could barely speak. She suddenly lost control and lunged toward Mr. Ward, trying to pull the needles from his body.
Natalie immediately intercepted her. “What’s wrong?” she asked, alarmed.
“Why are you still trying to save him? His parents set you up on purpose! It was all to save Marie. They were just trying to stall us. I’ll pull these needles out and let them plan their son’s funeral.”
Mrs. Lockwood lunged to pull the needles from Mr. Ward’s body.
Natalie stopped her again. “Calm down. What exactly happened?”
Mrs. Lockwood said angrily, “Today was the day of Marie’s trial. She should have been sentenced to life in prison, maybe even worse, but she was acquitted! Released without charges!”
“What? Acquitted?”
Natalie had been so focused on treating Mr. Ward that while she knew today was Marie’s trial, she hadn’t had time to follow it.
“How is that possible? The evidence Terence provided was airtight. How could Marie have been acquitted?”
