The news that the Cross Group was bankrupt sent Marie reeling. She felt her legs give out. How could this be?
If the Cross Group was gone, she was finished. There was no one left to bail her out. She would never get out of here.
Marie felt the world go dark around her. It had to be Terence. It had to be.
How did Natalie get so lucky? She just happened to meet Terence, a man willing to do anything for her.
Marie’s hands clenched into tight fists, her rage burning with nowhere to go.
“I heard the Cross family’s house was mortgaged,” the lawyer continued. “The moment the bankruptcy was announced, the creditors showed up to evict them. They said the family was thrown out without being allowed to take anything.”
At those words, Marie’s head snapped up.
“What did you say? They couldn’t take anything? What about Victoria?”
“It all happened so fast. The people from the mortgage company arrived almost immediately. They cleared the house quickly and didn’t let them take a single valuable item, not even jewelry. From what I heard, Victoria left with nothing but the clothes on her back.”
Hearing this, Marie threw her head back and laughed.
“Ha ha ha!”
Victoria, that old schemer. She had put on an act to trick her into revealing the safe combination, and now she had gotten nothing. In fact, she’d lost everything she had herself. This was karma!
Just a moment ago, Marie had been in agony. Now, a strange sense of balance settled over her. Victoria wasn't going to get her hands on any of her things!
The lawyer frowned, watching Marie laugh. Had being locked up finally driven her mad?
The Cross family losing all their assets was terrible news. It meant they had even less money to work with. Why was she smiling?
