All Victoria could think about was how much money she was losing.

She turned to Marie angrily. "Didn't your parents say they were well-connected with all the prominent families? They told us to send out as many invitations as we wanted and that everyone would show up. Look at all these tables! Who's here?"

Marie had envisioned a grand, bustling wedding reception. Instead, the enormous hall was practically deserted. The humiliation was unbearable.

Her mother-in-law's accusation was the last straw.

"The reception is the groom's family's responsibility, isn't it? My parents only added a few names to the guest list. If people didn't show up, that's on your family. How can you blame my parents?" Marie shot back.

Her retort infuriated Victoria.

But Marie wasn't finished.

She pointed to a corner of the hall. "And what about your poor relatives from back home? Didn't you say the family elders were planning to disown you? You still set aside ten tables for them, and not a single person came. Do all those empty tables look good to you?"

The sarcasm in Marie's voice made Victoria see red. This woman had caused their branch of the family to be disowned, and she didn't show an ounce of remorse.

Was being cast out by the family something to be proud of? Victoria had been trying to mend things.

How dare Marie mock her? It was infuriating.

But the thought of the Ward family's fortune made Victoria swallow her anger.

"The others don't matter. Let the tables stay empty. But why aren't your parents here yet? Shouldn't you call and ask?"
