Marie was practically fuming at Darren’s words.
She knew what he meant: if his brother hadn’t died, they wouldn’t have had a chance to rekindle their romance.
While it was true, was this really something he had to say on their wedding day?
Marie couldn’t take it anymore.
“Darren, today is supposed to be a happy day for us. Why do you keep bringing up your brother? What are you trying to do?”
Her face was flushed with anger. Darren just looked at her coolly. “Seeing you in a wedding dress just reminded me of him. You looked beautiful in that white gown at your last wedding. You and my brother made a perfect couple.”
He remembered how his own feelings of resentment had vanished the moment he saw them together. He had accepted reality then.
He had understood that Marie had chosen his brother, and from that point on, they had to respect their boundaries.
She was the one who had betrayed their relationship. It seemed he still couldn't forgive her.
Marie suppressed her rage, her eyes turning cold. “Darren, I know you’re still upset about the choice I had to make back then. But your brother has been gone for five years, and right now, the Cross Group needs the support of the Ward Group. If you don’t want to go through with this wedding, just say the word. I’ll get out of this car right now!”
She wasn’t going to tolerate this humiliation. The Cross Group wasn’t what it used to be. It was battered and bruised from the Lockwood Group’s attacks and needed her family’s help. Why should she have to put up with this?
Just as Marie was about to get out, Darren suddenly wrapped his arm around her neck.
“You’re the bride today. You shouldn’t be angry.”
Although his words were meant to soothe her, and the gesture was intimate, Marie felt a strange chill run down her spine.
Was the air conditioning in the car too cold?
But at least Darren was holding her, which calmed her down significantly.
“Don’t forget our goal,” he said. “To make the Cross Group a new powerhouse.”
Though he seemed to be talking to Marie, he knew he was really talking to himself.
