What had just happened left Hanley stunned. He nodded numbly.
Marie wrapped her arms around him. "Look at you, you poor thing. From now on, no matter what happens, you need to stay calm. Don't panic. And when we're outside, remember to hold my hand, and nothing bad will happen, okay?"
Marie took Hanley's hand; his palm was sweaty.
Marie's composure, completely devoid of guilt, made Hanley wonder. Could it be that she really hadn't pushed him? Had he run into the road because she had startled him?
Marie suddenly spoke in a gentle, comforting tone. "Hanley, don't be scared. Mommy's here. Nothing will happen."
Mommy?
She wasn't his mommy.
But this time, Hanley didn't dare say anything.

"About that old woman from the Cross family, are you sure you don't want me to handle it? You're really going to leave it to the police? She won't be locked up for long that way."
Terence pressed Natalie, unwilling to let the old woman off so easily.
Natalie replied calmly, "For someone like Victoria, even one day in jail, let alone a few, will be a living hell."
Terence sighed. "You're great in every way, except you're too soft-hearted."
Natalie raised an eyebrow. "Calling someone soft-hearted these days isn't exactly a compliment, you know."
"You might have a point there. After all, I wasn't praising you."
Natalie was speechless. Why did he have to be so blunt?
Just then, Natalie's phone buzzed. It was a message from Patrick Mercer.
