Darren felt suffocated, but he had no way to argue.
“What makes me furious is that Natalie is with Terence Lockwood now. So why is she pushing him to go after the Cross Group? What good does it do her if our company goes under? Even if she’s annoyed with you for chasing after her, she shouldn’t have Terence attack us. Hanley is her son, after all! If the Cross Group goes bankrupt, how is Hanley supposed to live with that!”
Marie’s words made Darren, who was already harboring doubts, grow even more grim.
Victoria said angrily, “Natalie has gone too far. She’s using her powerful boyfriend to try and destroy us. Marie, I know you won’t just stand by and watch. The Ward Group won’t let the Cross Group go bankrupt, right?”
Marie held Victoria’s hand and said, “Mom, the market is tough right now. The Ward Group just got lucky with one project that’s doing well enough to keep us afloat.”
“Marie, I know you’re still angry. That’s why you’re saying this. If I were you, I’d be angry too. After five years of hard work, Darren had the nerve to kick you out. If I wasn’t sick and stuck in this bed, I’d get up and slap him twice.”
“Mom, don’t get worked up.”
Marie offered her hollow comfort.
Then, Victoria looked at Darren reproachfully. “Don’t you know what you’re supposed to do now?”
Darren stood motionless, his heart torn to shreds.
“Darren, I’m warning you. Apologize to Marie right now. Only if she forgives you, only if she agrees to marry you, will the Ward Group help us. Only then can the Cross Group be saved from bankruptcy.”
Marie looked at Darren. The man who had been so adamant about her leaving now seemed to have lost all his fight, looking utterly defeated.
He never expected payback to come so quickly, and all thanks to Terence for starting it!
