Darren was even more furious. Other people's kids were assets, fighting on their side, but his own useless son, Hanley, did nothing but drag him down.
Now it was Darren's turn to feel miserable.
"Natalie, you're defending this brat so fiercely. Don't you see how hurt I am? I prepared all of this so carefully, and he just ruined it. The most despicable creatures in this world are brats."
Lucas retorted, "No, the most despicable creature in this world isn't a brat. It's a child who would slander his own mother for the sake of another woman."
Darren was speechless. He was so angry he could die. He couldn't throw this kid into the sea—Natalie wouldn't let him. But maybe he could throw himself in!
His emotional energy completely depleted, Darren said with a sense of utter defeat, "Natalie, you don't have to protect him. I won't throw him into the sea. I'll go in myself."
Natalie froze. Was he saying he was going to jump into the ocean?
Lucas piped up, "Go on, then. The ocean's right there, it's not like it has a lid on it."
Darren was at a loss for words. He never thought he'd be defeated by a child.
Just then, Liana arrived. She walked happily to Natalie and gestured in sign language.
[Natalie, can we go home?]
Darren didn't understand sign language, but seeing the way Natalie smiled down at the little girl stung him.
"A hyperactive brat and a mute girl. Is this what you want? To be their stepmother?"
