Victoria was momentarily awestruck by her surroundings before Natalie spoke first. “What are you here for?”

Victoria snapped back to the present, her eyes landing on Natalie and the woman beside her. “Well, Natalie,” she sneered, “it looks like you’re doing quite well for yourself at the Lockwood estate. A nice place to work. You even brought your little friend along. Aren’t you afraid someone prettier will steal Terence away from you?”

Mrs. Lockwood almost laughed out loud. Victoria was an awful person, but fools could be amusing.

“You don’t need to worry about that,” Mrs. Lockwood said with a smile. “Terence is completely devoted to Natalie. No woman, no matter how beautiful, could ever tempt him away.”

“Oh, please,” Victoria scoffed dramatically. “Completely devoted? No woman could tempt him? That sounds exactly like something a two-faced schemer would say to make everyone lower their guard before she swoops in to steal him herself. I’m just looking out for you, Natalie. Don’t come crying to me when your rebound guy gets snatched away.”

Mrs. Lockwood was finding it harder and harder to hold back her laughter. The woman was so stupid it was hilarious.

“I doubt you came all this way just to ‘look out for me’,” Natalie said coldly.

“Well, something like that,” Victoria said with a smug grin. “I’m here to share some happy news with you. Something you need to be the first to know.”

Share happy news with her? Natalie found the idea absurd. What joyous news could Victoria possibly have to share?
