"You don't need to worry about whether we have someone for our parent-teacher conference.
But don't you dare try to guilt-trip Natalie."
Lucas and Liana felt it would be better to have no one attend their conference than to see Natalie forced into a situation she didn't want. After everything that had happened, why should she have to forgive them?
"You're clearly nervous, so why pretend otherwise?" Hanley taunted. "Hmph, let's make a bet, shall we? If my mom comes to my parent-teacher conference, you two will have to act like little dogs and hop around the playground twice. Deal?"
"That's pathetic."
Lucas immediately rejected the stupid bet.
But Hanley, acting like he'd already won, wouldn't let it go.
"You say it's pathetic because you're not confident, right?"
Lucas detested Hanley, but for Natalie's sake, he didn't want to make things difficult. He knew that even if Natalie never acted as Hanley's mother again, she wouldn't want to see her son bullied. So, he tried to avoid conflict to spare her any trouble.
He was trying to be the bigger person, but Hanley was relentlessly pushing him.
"We just don't want to stoop to your level."
"What a loser. You won't even make a bet. You know you can't keep my mom, and you're scared, aren't you?"
Lucas had been about to lead his sister back to their seats, but Hanley's words ignited his anger. Everyone has their limits.
"Fine, Hanley. You're on!"
