A clerk remarked, “Your friend is so good to you.”
Mrs. Lockwood grinned. “You’re too kind. Wrap all of these up.”
Natalie was speechless. More? They couldn’t buy any more, or they’d end up taking the entire mall home.
“We really can’t buy any more.”
“Uh… alright then.”
Hearing Mrs. Lockwood agree to stop, Natalie finally breathed a sigh of relief. That was terrifying.
Finally, no more shopping.
“If we’re not shopping, let’s go to a bar for a few drinks to celebrate.”
“A bar?” Natalie said nervously. “Maybe not. We’ve been celebrating all day with the shopping.”
“Don’t worry, I’m just taking you somewhere to relax.”
Mrs. Lockwood handed all the shopping bags to her driver and then pulled Natalie toward a place called the Velvet Lantern.
“Mrs. Lockwood, are we really going in there?”
“In a bar, don’t call me Mrs. Lockwood. Call me Catherine.”
“Uh… Catherine.”
“Good girl. Let’s go.”
The music inside the Velvet Lantern was deafening, a collision of youthful energy and hormones that made Natalie feel a bit out of place.
Mrs. Lockwood said to her, “Is this your first time? It’s actually a great place to forget your troubles.”
With that, she handed Natalie a drink.
“This one’s called First Sight. It’s sweet, but it has a kick. Don’t worry, I’ll protect you.”
Natalie looked at Mrs. Lockwood, not feeling very confident. Mrs. Lockwood had just downed a glass herself and already seemed a little tipsy.
“Life is like a first meeting. And First Sight is a good drink. Hehe.”
