“You know what?” Julian’s voice filled with amused interest. “Don’t tell me the kid humiliated him?”
Isabel explained Adrian’s situation.
Julian laughed. “What’s the big deal? It’s not for life, just a month. What can he do to you?”
“You taught him this,” Isabel said through gritted teeth. “Telling him it’s what men care about most.”
“It is what they care about most,” Julian soothed. “Don’t overthink it. Just tell him it’ll be over in a month. What can he say? If he tries to do anything to Edmund, you can just beg him.”
Isabel was so furious she couldn't speak for a moment.
She finally managed, her teeth practically grinding, “I’m begging *you*.”
“Fine, I’ll call him.”
He hung up before she could protest.
Isabel quickly redialed, but the line was already busy.
So annoying.
Why was every man in her life so infuriating?
Isabel took a deep breath and, despite everything, bought some fruit and went to the hospital.
Daniel was surprised to see her.
Two visits in one day was a rare occurrence.
“You two talk.” He took the hint and stepped into the outer room.
Isabel walked over and set the fruit down.
She glanced at his phone and asked, “Did anyone just call you?”
Seeing her for the second time that day, and noting that her attitude was no longer hostile, Adrian basically understood what had happened.
“It was Edmund.”
Adrian said, “I promised you a divorce, and I will follow through. I’ve said it many times; I won’t go back on my word. Even if you’re worried, you should wait until tomorrow to see what happens before saying all this.”
“Even if I promise you right now, can you guarantee I won’t change my mind tomorrow?”
Isabel could only say, “No matter what, X-1 still saved your life. And I only went to the state capital because you failed to manage your own network. You saved me, but I’ve repaid you. We’re even.”
“So, if you’re planning to use what Edmund did to threaten me, I won’t agree to it.”
When he saw she wasn’t taking the apple, Adrian ate it himself.
“Go on, get back to your work. I’ll see you tomorrow at ten, at City Hall.”
Seeing that he didn’t seem angry, Isabel left.
But she couldn't shake the feeling that something was off, so she asked Daniel about it.
Daniel was also a bit baffled. “I think it’s fine. Mr. Blackwell is serious this time. He doesn’t want to break another promise to you. After all, he wants to be on good terms with you.”
Isabel left the hospital. She would find out everything tomorrow.
