Selena had transferred to their school midway through the year.
She came from a well-connected family, much like Adrian and the others, and moved in privileged circles.
She had plenty of friends.
Back then, Isabel was always busy.
Her mother had her learning so many things that she rarely had time to hang out.
But Selena was incredibly persistent.
Sometimes, Isabel couldn't refuse, and Selena would follow her home.
Then, Selena's aunt started coming over to the house as well.
After a while, they all got along quite well.
Later, by a stroke of luck—or so she thought—Selena arranged for her and Adrian to meet, and it was love at first sight.
Selena even helped play matchmaker for them.
"Don't tell me our meeting was also part of her plan?"
Adrian wanted to deny it, but he couldn't find the words. He changed the subject. "You know the rest. Her biological mother showed up with her son, and your father kicked you and your mother out. Your mother didn't have long because of her cancer, and to get revenge on Selena and her mother…"
"Stop," Isabel interrupted, her eyes red. "She's gone now. Let some things stay buried with her."
"Whether I know or not, there's no one left to ask."
"I'm doing great now. I've found my birth parents. I won't be using the Jiang surname anymore. My name is Isabel Ashford."
Adrian thought she'd been pushed over the edge and quickly apologized. "I shouldn't have said that. Punish me however you want, but please don't hurt yourself. I know this is hard for you to accept. I didn't want to say anything, but I lost my temper…"
Adrian's expression hardened. "Mr. Ashford, I'm trying to speak with you respectfully. If you have a bad temper, then I can't feel at ease letting Isabel acknowledge you as her father."
"Ha!" Julian couldn't hold it in any longer and chuckled, handing him the file. "See for yourself."
The document wasn't an identity cancellation form at all. It was a paternity test.
It was from a highly respected lab in Westbridge.
The test subjects were Isabel and Mr. and Mrs. Ashford. The final result confirmed a parent-child relationship.
"You can read this, can't you? You grew up in Westbridge, so you must know this lab. Take a good look. My sister here is an Ashford."
Julian finished, expecting to see Adrian break down. Instead, Adrian scoffed. "This again?"
"When Isabel was changing her identity before, Catherine had a paternity test done for her. That one also showed they were related. So, you realized the foreign tricks wouldn't work and decided to get one done locally?"
