Jordan sat at his desk, buried under a mountain of paperwork. Ever since Jackson remarried, he barely showed up at the office, leaving Jordan to handle everything. Still, for anything important, Jordan had to call and check in with Jackson. Even from a distance, Jackson never really let go of control.
There was a time when Jackson trusted him more, letting him make big decisions on his own. But after Jackson’s affair came to light, he started quietly pulling back, taking away a little more of Jordan’s authority each day. Jordan wasn’t stupid—he knew exactly why. Jackson was worried that if he ever got real power, he might turn against Deborah and Kevin.
The sound of a door opening made Jordan look up, but the office door was still shut. Then he heard footsteps, light and familiar, coming from the lounge. He turned just as Natalie stepped out.
He froze, heart pounding. When did she get here? Had she heard anything he said to Malvina? Had she seen anything? His mind raced as he tried to figure out what to do next.
But then it hit him. If Natalie had actually witnessed something, she’d be yelling at him already, probably screaming at Malvina and making a scene. That was just who she was—never one to hold back when she was upset.
With that realization, he felt himself relax. He set his pen down and walked over to her.
“Hey, babe. When did you get here? I didn’t even see your car downstairs.”
Natalie handed him an insulated lunchbox and gave a soft, tired yawn. “I got here around noon, but you were out for lunch. I just ate in your office. When you still weren’t back, I got sleepy and took a nap in your lounge.”
