“Natalie.”
She stopped in her tracks. Someone was blocking her way.
It was one of York’s bodyguards.
Natalie’s heart skipped. Her eyes flickered with panic, but she forced herself to keep calm. “What do you want?”
“Natalie, York would like to see you. He’d like to have a chat.”
His words sounded polite, but his eyes were cold enough to freeze her in place. There was no mistaking it. This wasn’t a request.
She managed a weak smile. “I don’t even know York. There’s nothing to talk about.”
The bodyguard’s voice dropped. “Once you go, you’ll get to know him. York doesn’t have a lot of patience. It’s best not to keep him waiting. If you do, well… there’s no telling what might happen.”
Natalie’s face tightened. She wanted to say no, to push back, but in the end, she just lowered her gaze. “Where is he?”
The bodyguard motioned for her to follow.
With no other choice, Natalie trailed behind him out of the crowded banquet hall and toward the elevators.
She stopped short at the elevator doors, her guard up. “Where are you taking me?”
“York is waiting on the top floor.”
“He said this place is too public. Too easy for people to overhear. For your reputation, he thought it’d be better to talk upstairs. Don’t worry, Natalie. No one will notice once you’re in the elevator.”
He pressed the button and gestured for her to go in.
