Ethan kept talking about saving their marriage, but Isabella didn’t see any real effort. He said he knew he’d messed up, over and over, but what had he actually done for her? A few flowers, some gifts. That was pretty much it.
Susan thought Ethan had given so much. But in Isabella’s eyes, he still only cared about Natalie.
Isabella picked up her phone and called Ethan.
It took ages for him to answer.
“Ethan, are you still in bed? It’s after eight. We agreed to be at the courthouse by nine to file for divorce. Don’t even think about backing out.”
Ethan’s voice was groggy, like he hadn’t really woken up yet. It took him a moment to reply. “I had a few drinks last night. Slept kind of hard. Sorry for making you wait. I’m getting up now.”
“You were drinking again? Even when you knew we had stuff to do today? You’re always drinking. If you keep this up, you’re going to ruin your stomach.” Isabella couldn’t help scolding him. “Just get up. Drink some honey water to sober up a bit.”
“Okay,” Ethan said, his voice rough. “Can you tell Susan to make some for me?”
Isabella said she would. After she hung up, she turned to Susan. “He drank again last night. Susan, can you make him some honey water? Maybe it’ll help him feel better.”
“All he does is drink. He’s going to regret it when his health goes downhill,” Susan said, her tone full of concern for Ethan. “Isabella, he only drinks because of you. Since you two got married, has there ever been another reason?”
“How can you be so cold? You won’t even give him a chance to make things right.”
“Everyone makes mistakes. Sure, Ethan used to really like Natalie, but after you got married, he started falling for you instead.”
