Ethan was the one who had to move out.
He sat up slowly, his head pounding. Pressing his fingers to his aching temples, he tried to chase away the pain. Last night had been rough. After his call with Jordan, he’d poured himself a few drinks from the little bar in his room, hoping the alcohol would dull everything he was feeling. He hadn’t gotten drunk, but the headache was still there when he woke up.
Honestly, he’d wanted to get wasted. Maybe if he was out of it, he could put off facing today, could avoid going to sign the divorce papers. In the end, he couldn’t go through with it. He was too afraid of Isabella’s reaction. She didn’t hold back anymore. If she was upset, she let him have it, no filter at all.
He had to admit, he wasn’t used to being yelled at like that. Isabella had done it more than once, and somehow, he never got mad at her for it. If anything, he found himself more and more willing to forgive her. It didn’t matter, though. She was done giving him chances. She wanted out, and she wasn’t going to back down.
Ethan let out a heavy sigh and got up, ignoring the ache in his head. After getting dressed and washing up, he suddenly remembered his wedding ring. He hadn’t worn it since just after the ceremony. Where did he put it?
He started searching through his drawers and boxes until finally, he found the ring and slid it back onto his finger. He knew Isabella wasn’t wearing hers either. It was almost funny. Married for only two days and he’d already taken it off. Now, right before the divorce, he was putting it back on. What was the point? It wouldn’t change anything. It wouldn’t bring her back.
She said she didn’t love him anymore. She didn’t want him.
He was the one being left behind.
Carrying that regret and pain, Ethan left his room and headed downstairs. He heard Susan’s footsteps before he saw her, and she appeared in the hallway, waiting at the stairs for him.
“Ethan, I made you some honey water. Drink it and have a little breakfast. You don’t have to rush out the door,” she told him, her voice dropping to a whisper at the end, clearly not wanting Isabella to overhear.
