After I Stopped Loving Him novel Chapter 10

“There’s no such thing as a free lunch. If you want me to work for you, you’ll have to pay. Like I said, a few thousand is fine, a few million is even better. I’ll take as much as you want to give.”

Ethan stared at her, clearly not buying it. He didn’t believe for a second that someone who once loved him so much could just move on overnight. How could anyone let go that quickly? Loving someone was easy, but getting over them, especially when you loved them with your whole heart, was nearly impossible.

If it were that simple, he wouldn’t be hurting so much right now. When Jordan and Natalie started dating, he tried everything to move on from Natalie. He told himself to forget her, but it didn’t work. They’d grown up together. His feelings for her ran just as deep as Jordan’s. Even if Natalie never picked him, just seeing her happy was enough for him.

After a long silence filled with tension, Ethan finally spoke. His voice was cold, nearly biting. “Isabella Lane, you better not be messing with me.”

He turned his head away, staring out the window and refusing to look at her.

Isabella mumbled something under her breath and used her fingers to make little jabs in his direction, careful not to let him see.

Was she really over him? She thought about those first couple of days after she came back to life, how the nightmares from her past life kept replaying, how she’d cried until her eyes hurt. The pain from that old life had almost destroyed her, followed her even to her grave. But once she was certain that she’d really been given a second chance, everything became clear.

She wouldn’t make the same mistakes again. Not this time. She had no plans to fall for Ethan again. She didn’t care about his feelings for Natalie anymore. That was his problem, not hers. She’d just live her life, enjoy the money, use his resources, and make sure she got something out of this. He’d used her, hurt her, for so long. It was only fair to get a little payback now. It was her turn.

Isabella turned to look out the window, watching the scenery stream by as the car sped through the city. The driver up front had worked for Ethan for years. He was the quiet type, knew all of Ethan’s secrets, but never said a word. That loyalty was why Ethan trusted him so much.
