Janina walked closer. "Oh, that's not necessary. I've already booked a car. It'll be here soon."
A flash of panic crossed the driver's eyes, but he quickly composed himself. Fearing she wouldn't get in, he said quickly, "You can just cancel your booking. My boss sent me to pick you up. I can't let you take a taxi. If you don't get in, how am I supposed to explain this to him when I get back?"
As he spoke, the driver got out and took her suitcase from her.
Janina kept refusing, feeling it was completely unnecessary. The hotel was only a couple of miles away.
But the driver was incredibly insistent, leaving her no room to decline.
Fine.
He was just a guy trying to make a living, after all.
The driver got back in the car and glanced toward the back seat.
Janina didn't notice his expression as she opened the rear door and got in.
She was focused on her phone, canceling the ride she had just booked.
As soon as the booking was canceled, she immediately sensed something was wrong. There was someone else in the car, sitting in the last row of seats.
Why would anyone sit all the way in the back? Wouldn't they take the passenger seat or the middle row?
That realization put Janina on high alert.
She immediately called out, "Wait, I forgot something at the airport. I need to go back and get it."
Janina appeared calm on the surface, but her heart was pounding.
The driver who picked her up when she first arrived wasn't this man. She hadn't thought much of it when she got in; after all, a company wouldn't have just one driver.
Besides, he had called her "Miss Holt," so he obviously knew who she was.
This was Seacrest, and besides the supplier, no one knew her here. That's why she had instinctively assumed he was sent by them.
The driver, who was buckling his seatbelt, didn't say a word.
Seeing this, Janina immediately reached for the door handle.
The door was locked.
