He thought about it and decided it wasn't worth it. He'd put up with it for this long; he didn't want the neighbors to hear them fighting.
After washing the vegetables, Jarvis saw there was nothing left to wash or chop, so he asked, "Are there any more vegetables to prepare?"
Abigail shot him a venomous glare.
"Is the work in my hands? Can't you see the floor needs sweeping? You always wait for me to do everything. Do I have to spell everything out for you?"
Jarvis left the kitchen, grabbed a broom, and began to sweep. Normally, he cleaned up after dinner. He had no idea what was wrong with Abigail today, insisting he sweep right now.
From her room, Marjorie could hear Abigail's angry tirade. She was used to it, but her own mood was so foul that she just wanted to get out and not hear her mother's voice.
"I'm going out for a bit. I won't be home for dinner," Marjorie announced from the kitchen doorway after putting on her shoes.
Abigail, who was in the middle of preparing food, followed her out with the spatula still in hand. "Dinner's almost ready! Where are you going?"
Her only reply was the merciless sound of the front door closing.
Abigail was furious. She muttered complaints under her breath, losing her motivation to cook. In the end, only a small plate of greens and the tomato salad made it to the table.
The couple ate their meal in complete silence.
After dinner, Jarvis dutifully cleared the table and started washing the dishes.
As luck would have it, while washing a plate, his grip slipped, and it shattered on the floor.
Hearing the crash, Abigail rushed into the kitchen. Seeing the broken pieces, she unleashed a torrent of abuse on Jarvis.
Jarvis knew it was his fault, so he let Abigail yell as he squatted down to pick up the shards. In his haste, he cut his hand.
Abigail stood in the kitchen doorway with her hands on her hips, growing angrier by the second.
"How can you be so useless? You even managed to cut your hand! Are you doing this on purpose? Is your brain rusty? Don't you know how to use a broom? Serves you right!"
