And as for her own problems? Now that Mrs. Shipley knew about Starla's existence, Starla was as good as dead. The moment she lost Kael Shipley's backing, the Yelchin family would be free to crush Harriet's little issues as well. So no, Darleen had absolutely no reason to play nice.

Sensing the blatant disrespect, Harriet's voice iced over. "What exactly is your problem, Darleen?"

"My problem? Why don't you ask yourself what your precious daughter did to humiliate my family?!" Darleen shrieked, her pent-up rage exploding. "You don't like my attitude? My problem is that I was far too good to you people! I treated you with far too much respect!"

The resentment burned like acid in her chest. For years, she had treated Brinley and Harriet like royalty—even better than her own flesh and blood. If she had treated Brinley with the same disdain she'd reserved for Starla, she wouldn't feel so deeply wronged right now. But she had poured everything into Brinley, and this was how she was repaid.
