Brinley's complete lack of response sucked the satisfaction right out of Darleen's little power trip. After landing a few more heavy slaps, she scoffed in disgust and backed away.
Suddenly, Darleen's phone buzzed on the table. She glanced at the screen, her lips curling into a sneer when she saw the caller ID: Harriet Seabrook.
She picked it up. "What?"
Gone was the polite, deferential tone she used to reserve for the affluent businesswoman.
On the other end of the line, Harriet paused, clearly taken aback by the hostility. Frowning, she demanded, "Put Brinley on the phone."
Darleen let out a harsh bark of laughter. "Call her yourself. Do I look like your personal messenger?"
She wasn't even pretending to be civil anymore. In the past, she had thought Harriet was a heavyweight, someone capable of making massive problems in Yoran Country simply vanish. But looking at the situation now? The woman was practically useless.
And as for her own problems? Now that Mrs. Shipley knew about Starla's existence, Starla was as good as dead. The moment she lost Kael Shipley's backing, the Yelchin family would be free to crush Harriet's little issues as well. So no, Darleen had absolutely no reason to play nice.
Especially not to the mother of the woman who had humiliated her son.
Sensing the blatant disrespect, Harriet's voice iced over. "What exactly is your problem, Darleen?"
"My problem? Why don't you ask yourself what your precious daughter did to humiliate my family?!" Darleen shrieked, her pent-up rage exploding. "You don't like my attitude? My problem is that I was far too good to you people! I treated you with far too much respect!"
The resentment burned like acid in her chest. For years, she had treated Brinley and Harriet like royalty—even better than her own flesh and blood. If she had treated Brinley with the same disdain she'd reserved for Starla, she wouldn't feel so deeply wronged right now. But she had poured everything into Brinley, and this was how she was repaid. The sheer betrayal of it made her blood boil.
