A Widow's Poison A Wife's Rebellion novel Chapter 689

In Darleen's mind, Starla's current arrogance was just setting her up for a harder fall. The higher she climbed, the more devastating it would be when Mrs. Shipley finally arrived to drag her through the mud.

"Once Mrs. Shipley is done with her, we can step on her neck as much as we want. So, just be patient!" Darleen said, patting Xenia's arm.

She knew Xenia had never worked a day in her life. The physical labor Starla had forced upon them recently was undeniably the hardest thing the girl had ever endured.

Hearing her mother's confident reassurances, Xenia's expression softened slightly. "Okay."

"Now, hurry up and get back to work," Darleen urged.

There was still a mountain of chores to finish. For every day Mrs. Shipley delayed her arrival, they had to endure another day of manual labor.

Honestly, Darleen was annoyed too. What was the point of Mrs. Shipley arguing with her husband right now? Her first priority should be flying here and ripping Starla to shreds!

Xenia picked the broom back up with a heavy sigh. "I just wish I knew exactly when she was getting here."

Even knowing salvation was right around the corner didn't make the present misery any easier to bear. The physical exhaustion was bone-deep. Xenia just wanted the nightmare to end.

"Soon. Two more days, tops," Darleen declared with absolute certainty.

"Is Brinley skipping chores again?" Xenia grumbled, looking around the empty hallway.

It was infuriating. Whenever Brinley refused to work, the burden fell entirely on them.

"Who cares?" Darleen scoffed. "If she doesn't work, we don't have to share our food with her."

If the girl wanted to starve, let her starve.

Xenia pursed her lips but didn't argue further.
