In the center of the large living room sat Hershel, his stepmother, and Wendy. All three of them were talking and chuckling among themselves… And for the first time in forever, Zivon could see just how blissful Wendy was.
Even so, the frowning man walked up to her and asked, “…What are you doing here, Mom?”
Smiling awkwardly as she turned to look at her son, she was about to say something when Hershel interrupted, “There you are, Zivon! Look, long story short, I gave some thought about my relationship with your mother, and in the end, I came to the conclusion that I hadn’t been treating her as well as I should have. It was wrong of me to dump her before this, and to make things right again, I plan to marry her into our family.”
“Don’t worry, I’ve discussed this with your stepmother, and if everything goes right, Wendy will be my second wife and an official, respectable Burton,” concluded Hershel as though he was declaring something grand.
The Burton family was at least a century old, and with its high prestige and focus on tradition, it was understandable for Wendy to want to be part of the family. However, none of this mattered to Zivon.
“Thanks, but no thanks. Let’s head home, Mom.”
Pursing her lips, Wendy was about to reply when Hershel once again interrupted, “What is the meaning of this, Zivon? I’ve already introduced her to the family as my apology, what else do you want? It’s not like you accompany her that much with how much you work and handle things like your wedding preparations.”
“Speaking of which, it won’t be practical for Wendy to continue living with you after your marriage. Your stepmother and I assure that we’ll treat her well as a Burton, unless you’d prefer if she spent the rest of her life alone without any recognition from society…?”
“No need to put on airs. I’ll be sure to take good care of her,” scoffed Zivon as he motioned for her to follow him… But to his surprise, she didn’t budge an inch.
