“If you don’t go check on Shipley right now, you’ll be collecting his body.”
Silvia’s tone was flat, but the words sent a chill down Vianne’s spine.
Only then did Vianne snap out of her daze. She spun around and dashed back the way she’d come.
She skidded to a stop right in front of Shipley.
Her gaze locked on the man at her feet, a bitter ache flickering in her eyes.
She had never seen Shipley look so utterly defeated.
Even back when people used to mock him for being Finn’s sidekick, Shipley had always managed to keep his composure—calm, polite, and quietly dignified.
He’d always cared deeply about saving face.
And Vianne had always done her best to protect that for him.
But now, everything had changed. Vianne realized with a pang that for Silvia’s sake, Shipley was willing to throw away the very thing he valued most—his pride.
If he could give that up, just how important was Silvia to him?
A low groan broke through Vianne’s thoughts.
She blinked, snapping back to reality, and stared at Shipley with trembling lips.
After a long moment, she finally whispered, “Shipley, why are you so foolish? Is she really worth it?”
Shipley’s eyes fluttered open, unfocused at first, but when he realized it was Vianne, his gaze softened.
He tugged the corners of his mouth into a weak smile and tried to reassure her. “Don’t cry, Vianne. I’m fine—it doesn’t even hurt.”
