Vianne looked anxious, her voice tight with urgency. The way she stared at Silvia, you’d think Silvia had committed some unspeakable crime.
Kent, seeing Vianne’s accusatory stance, instinctively stepped a little closer to Silvia, as if to shield her. But before he could say anything, Silvia gently squeezed his hand.
Turning slightly, Silvia met Kent’s eyes and shook her head, signaling him to stay out of it. Then she looked back at Vianne and spoke, her tone even, “If you’re questioning whether it was me or Shipley who crossed the line, you should probably ask him yourself.”
“You…” Vianne glared at Silvia, but for a moment, the words caught in her throat. She had no real comeback.
The truth was, Vianne already knew what Shipley had been planning tonight.
Earlier that afternoon, she’d assumed she and Shipley would leave the office together as usual. But he insisted he needed to stay behind. Vianne, not wanting to go home alone, had offered to wait with him, hoping maybe her presence might bring him some comfort. After all, they lived together now—wasn’t it only natural to want to be there for him?
But the moment she suggested staying, Shipley flatly told her to go. She protested, tried to coax him, but after a few tries, he finally said, “I need to keep an eye on Silvia tonight.”
For a split second, Vianne felt as if her heart had shattered. She’d given Shipley everything—her time, her love, her loyalty. But after being gone for five years and finally coming back, she realized Shipley’s eyes were fixed only on Silvia.
A bitter smile crept onto her lips.
Sensing her distress, Shipley eventually looked up from his work, softened his expression, and wrapped his arms around her waist. He even pressed a gentle kiss to her temple. “Vianne, you understand me, don’t you?” he murmured.
With him phrasing it like that, Vianne didn’t really have the option to say she didn’t. So, holding onto her graceful composure, she replied softly, “Of course, Shipley. Whatever you do, I support you. You’re all I have.”
