Year Five The Perfect Goodbye Plan novel Chapter 167

Laurinda’s words drew a quiet laugh from Silvia.

She lowered her gaze, her elegant eyes lingering on the silverware before her, a flicker of complexity crossing her features.

The truth was, Kent had given her more than enough in the way of wedding gifts—so much so that Silvia hadn’t bothered to count it all. She’d simply set everything aside, figuring that if she ever ran into an emergency, she could dip into it then.

Yet here was Laurinda, sounding as if she’d done a detailed inventory of every last thing Silvia had received. The whole thing struck Silvia as faintly ridiculous.

What exactly was Laurinda after?

Silvia cleared her throat softly and looked up, meeting Laurinda’s gaze. Her voice was gentle, even: “Aunt Laurinda, I’m sorry, but I honestly don’t know. I only know that Kent was quite generous, but as for the exact amount, I really have no idea.”

“You really don’t know what’s in your own name?” Laurinda pressed, her tone skeptical.

Who in their right mind wouldn’t care about their own assets? In this world, money was everything. Laurinda found Silvia’s answer a little too convenient to be believable.

Then again, this was barely their first real conversation. Was Silvia already on guard with her? Had Kent warned her in advance?

When Silvia didn’t respond right away, Laurinda exhaled slowly, her smile deepening, crimson lips curving with meaning.

Suddenly, Laurinda reached across the table and clasped Silvia’s hand. Her voice softened, losing some of its earlier edge. “Silvia, please don’t misunderstand me. I only mean well. Kent is the most important member of this generation of the Parsons family. Now that you’re his wife, you’re just as important to us.”

Important—so important they had to probe her like this?
