Garth could never hide how much he liked Bonnie. He’d always try to save his best toys just for her.
“Mom, are you going to give me a baby sister too?”
Mamie and Scott hadn’t gone out of their way to find out the gender. Still, during one of Mamie’s checkups, the doctor had quietly hinted at it.
Even Scott, who almost never smiled or joked around, was so happy he ended up sharing a couple of celebratory drinks with his dad.
Latham had mostly stopped drinking by now. With two kids and his sweet wife waiting at home, he never wanted to risk it. One mistake was all it took to mess things up.
Dorothea beamed at Mamie. “Congrats—you finally got what you wished for.”
Mamie rested a hand on her belly and gave a soft smile. “Honestly, I thought it would never happen. It was only after I gave up hope that I got pregnant.”
Dorothea was sitting on the porch swing, gazing at the stars above. “Maybe that’s just how things were meant to be.”
Mamie nodded. “Yeah.”
If things had happened any sooner or later, her whole story with Scott might not have turned out so intense, so unforgettable.
“Tanner mentioned yesterday you have a business magazine interview tomorrow. Dorothea, I’m so proud of you.”
The Gresham had taken off so quickly. Dorothea didn’t think twice anymore about using the resources from The Stephens Group either. What used to be just a couple of stores had grown into a chain spreading all over the country.
They were already making preparations to expand into other countries too.
And Dorothea had pulled it off in just three short years.
She and Mamie, who started out as boss and employee, felt more like true partners now. Friends, side by side, facing challenges together.
“Mamie, take it easy if you ever get tired, okay? Work stuff can wait, the VP is handling things. You don’t have to worry.”
Dorothea said it on purpose. She knew how Mamie liked to fuss over the details.
Mamie grinned. “I know. I’m not putting my health at risk. And honestly, I’m not that delicate. I’m nowhere near as exhausted as you were when you had twins.”

Latham knew his wife was about to be featured in a special interview, and he couldn’t have been prouder.
“Hey babe, what day does that issue come out?”
“I think Friday,” Dorothea replied casually.
Not content with just reading one copy, Latham went ahead and bought a hundred digital editions and a hundred print versions, just to support her.
