When My Ex's Worst Enemy Became My Sanctuary novel Chapter 380

After Latham got out, even with Walton sitting behind bars, the guy was still getting schooled by the other inmates. Walton couldn’t help but regret not just ending things fast—life inside had turned out to be pure torture.

When Dorothea hit the five-month mark in her pregnancy, Latham bent over, pressing his ear to her belly. Out of nowhere, their baby kicked him for the first time.

“Ow! Honey, our son just kicked me!” he said, half whining and half laughing.

Dorothea shot him a playful glare. “And how do you know it’s not our daughter doing the kicking?”

Latham grinned. “A daughter would be a sweet little angel, you know. She’d never kick her dad.”

But then he turned away, just for a second. Dorothea caught the way he wiped the corner of his eye. She stared at him in surprise.

“Wait—are you crying?”

He quickly shook his head. “No way.” He tried to play it off, pretending nothing happened. Latham had his pride, after all. But it just caught up with him, realizing his life was about to change completely. Of course he’d never admit that to her.

Dorothea didn’t push it. She let him have his moment.

Every now and then, when she wanted to tease him, Dorothea would ask, “So, how come you don’t sneak off to write in your diary anymore?”

He’d roll his eyes and say, “Come on, my wife’s right here. Why would I? I only needed that diary back when life felt all sour. These days, everything’s just... sweet. Doesn’t make sense to keep writing.”

Dorothea never bothered arguing with him about it. She just let it go.

But carrying twins was no joke. By the last stretch, Dorothea felt wiped out all the time. Forget going into the office—she couldn’t even cook herself a meal. Her stomach was so huge that she needed Latham’s help just to get her shoes on or tie her laces. Her face and feet were swollen. She glanced in the mirror and felt a wave of anxiety wash over her.

Latham kept telling her, “You’re beautiful. Always have been, always will be.” He’d say it over and over again until she almost believed him.

When she hit six months, Latham took things further. He transferred over almost all his assets, leaving just a small portion under his name. “Look, now you’re the boss. I’ll count on you to take care of me from now on. Feel better?”
