Scott watched her quietly, every little habit Mamie showed only making him more certain of his suspicions.
Mamie spent nearly the entire evening wrapped up with her son, doting on him until he finally drifted off to sleep. By the time she made her slow, reluctant way back to the master bedroom, Scott was already done with his shower and lying in bed. Mamie instantly regretted dragging her feet. If she'd known, she would have pretended to be asleep before he even got there.
“Go wash up,” Scott said, his voice even and unreadable.
Mamie flashed a strained smile. “Alright.”
She took her sweet time in the bathroom. Honestly, she stalled even longer than their very first night together, just after they'd gotten married. A whole two hours passed before she finally emerged. With her heart pounding, she peeked out, hoping Scott had fallen asleep already.
Instead, the moment she stepped out, she walked straight into him.
“You were in there so long, I got worried something happened to you.”
“Oh.”
Mamie stared down at her toes, sliding to the left to try and squeeze past him. But Scott seemed to read her mind, shifting half a step to block her way.
“Why are you so quiet? Is it because you’ve remembered everything and you think I’m going to call you out?”
The air seemed to freeze. In her mind, Mamie wanted to wail. Seriously? Was he some kind of detective in a past life? How did he always catch onto things so quickly?
She quickly forced a smile, making herself look up at him. “No, of course not. Why would you even say that?”
Scott’s lips curled. “Then kiss me. After you lost your memory, you kissed like someone who’d never done it before. You and I, before that... well, we had plenty of practice.”
The room was completely silent, except for their uneven breathing and the sound of her racing heartbeat. Scott reached out, long fingers lifting her chin, then kissed her. It was far more intense than last time. His thumb traced gentle circles at the nape of her neck, his cool touch sending a shiver down her spine that made her knees go weak.
Mamie barely had the strength to stand, let alone push him away. All her senses blurred. If this kept going, she knew exactly where it would lead.
