When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 28

Jessie ran Nelly through a bunch of tests, way more than usual. The results would take a couple of days to come back. Nelly looked totally wiped out, so before she left, Jessie handed her some medication and told her to eat light, nutritious meals and try to keep her mood up. Nelly thanked her, but paused like there was something else on her mind. Jessie caught on right away.

“Don’t worry, I’ll take good care of Carrie,” Jessie promised gently.

Nelly nodded. “Thank you, really... I know it’s a lot.”

“I’m still the Garland family’s private medical consultant. Taking care of Carrie is part of what I do.” Jessie hesitated for a moment, then smiled. She wasn’t the gossipy type, but Nelly was clearly different this time.

“Are you planning something?” Jessie asked quietly.

Nelly had always liked Jessie, and she didn’t want to keep secrets from her. “I’m getting a divorce,” she said, her voice low. “Carrie will probably choose to stay with Brody.”

Jessie thought about the woman she’d seen that night. She’d overheard some of the argument earlier too. So that was Brody’s old flame. Jessie felt a fresh wave of sympathy for Nelly. She quickly exchanged numbers with her.

“If you ever need anything, just call me. Your health comes first, okay? Don’t burn yourself out for anyone else,” Jessie said, sincere.

Nelly nodded, grateful.

Brody was waiting in Carrie’s hospital room, but only Jessie walked in.

“Where is she?” he asked, sounding tense.

“She went home. She was exhausted, she needed to rest,” Jessie replied, changing Carrie’s bandages as she spoke.
