Jessie was honestly a little annoyed. Sure, Brody was good-looking, but he didn’t have a single nice-guy vibe about him. She never cared much for the drama of rich families, but she did like Nelly. There was just something about her, a kind of strength none of those society wives had. Sometimes, when Jessie watched her, she felt kind of bad for her. Turns out, women’s intuition really never missed.
“By the way, how’s Mrs. Garland doing lately? Did she ever get that check-up?” Jessie paused, but she couldn’t help asking Brody.
He looked at her, a little confused. “Check-up?”
“Don’t tell me you didn’t know. Mrs. Garland was admitted for two days not long ago because of a stomach bleed. I had someone book her a follow-up.” Jessie was busy, so she’d handed Nelly off to the best doctor in their department and honestly forgot about it. Now that she thought about it, she hadn’t seen Nelly come back.
Brody’s face fell, and for a second, he didn’t know what to say. She’d been hospitalized, and he hadn’t even knew. Was that why she wanted to quit? Because of her health?
“Mrs. Garland really has it tough. If you could just care a little more, even if it’s just as a friend, maybe she wouldn’t be driving herself into the ground like this.” Jessie knew she was poking at Brody’s biggest sore spot, but she didn’t care, even if it meant losing her job as his private consultant.
Right after Jessie finished, Carrie came out. It was late, and the little girl was so tired her eyes kept closing. Brody called Alan over, planning to have him take Carrie home, but she refused no matter what he said. She was determined to stay with Sheila, and deep down, she was still sulking about Nelly.
Seeing her like this, Sheila spoke up. “Brody, I’m so sorry we kept you up half the night. I’m fine now, you all should go home and get some rest.”
But Sheila was alone, and Brody just couldn’t leave her by herself in the hospital, hooked up to an IV.
