When Family Became a Place I Couldn’t Return To novel Chapter 12

Nelly was definitely not some helpless damsel who needed saving.

Before they even met, he had already dug up nearly everything about her past. Her whole world seemed to revolve around Brody and the Garland family. She had the education, the skills, and the resume, but after all those years, there was barely anything in her own name.

During their first meeting, Nelly had lost her cool. She was nothing like the poised heiress you’d imagine leading a billion-dollar empire. When Jonah’s father, Felix, heard about it, he almost wrote her off completely. Still, Jonah had insisted on giving her his contact info.

Turns out, his gut feeling was spot-on.

It had only been a few days, but she was like a different person. Most people would need ages to bounce back after heartbreak, but Nelly? She had already turned the page. It just proved she was never as fragile as she seemed.

Jonah always thought strength came with being cold and ruthless, but Nelly was different. He couldn’t quite figure out why she’d given so much to Brody, but he couldn’t help being curious.

“Compared to the rest of the Watsons, my father would rather see Christopher’s real daughter get the inheritance,” Jonah said at last, his voice softer now, more sincere.

“So, things with your family aren’t exactly great?” Nelly asked.

“You could put it that way,” Jonah replied gently. “My dad’s been in a wheelchair since he was a kid. The family pretty much abandoned him. In that sense, you and he have a lot in common.”

Nelly looked up sharply, her eyes icy as she met his gaze. Bringing up someone’s pain when you barely knew them... it wasn’t exactly polite.

But Jonah had done it intentionally. Whether Nelly trusted them or not didn’t matter. The truth was, if she wanted to fight the Watsons, they were her only shot.

“You’ve read the terms. So, how are you planning to help me?” Nelly wasn’t in the mood to argue.
