Other than her savings, Nelly only packed up her jewelry, a few clothes, and some photos of herself with Carrie and Finn. As for all those years’ worth of luxury gifts from Brody, including her diamond ring, she booked a service to pick them up and sold everything in a hurry for next to nothing.
“Ma’am, what’s going on? Did you and Mr. Garland have an argument?” Marian, the housekeeper, rushed over as soon as she noticed what was happening, trying to stop her. “If you sell all this without telling him, once he finds out he’ll…”
“I’m only selling my own things. Besides, I doubt he actually cares what I do.” Nelly smiled at Marian, her lips a bright, healthy red that made her look more alive than Marian had ever seen.
Marian stared at her, completely confused. Nelly was always putting her head down at work or taking care of her family. She never wore any makeup, and dressed so simply she could pass for one of the house staff. But today, she was in a sharp, fitted sky-blue suit under a cream coat. From her outfit to her makeup, everything about her looked effortlessly elegant. She seemed like a whole new person.
It was only now that Marian realized how gorgeous Nelly really was. She had a tiny waist, endless legs, flawless skin, and an air about her that was impossible to ignore.
“But… what about Carrie? You’re just leaving, all of a sudden?”
“Marian, thank you for helping me look after my daughter all these years. Please keep an eye on her from now on.” Nelly handed Marian a folder. “These are the divorce papers. Please give them to Brody. He’s busy, I’m busy, so he can contact me to work out the details later.”
Marian’s mind went blank. Divorce? Nelly, who used to revolve her entire world around her husband and daughter, was leaving?
Nelly didn’t give her a chance to react. By the time Marian tried to catch up, Nelly’s car had already pulled away.
