Julian crossed the room to her. “I had a few things to take care of. Didn’t notice how late it was.”
He wasn’t exactly convincing, but Madeline let it slide. “Oh, got it.”
“The maid said you weren’t feeling well. Is it your injury again? Does it hurt?”
Madeline shook her head, deciding not to tell him the truth. “No, just a little stomachache. It’s nothing, really. It’s late, you should go wash up and sleep.”
“Alright.”
Madeline drew the blanket up and lay down. Julian watched her for a moment, carefully tucking her in a little tighter before heading to the bathroom.
By the time he came out, she looked fast asleep. He slipped into bed next to her, pulling her gently into his arms. He found himself staring at her face, like he’d never get enough of looking at her.
The next morning, Julian made his way to Noah and Oliver’s room.
“Morning, Daddy,” they greeted.
“Come here, I’ve got something to talk to you about.” He motioned for them to join him.
Noah and Oliver exchanged a look, then scooted over to sit with him, sensing he meant business.
Noah blinked at him curiously. “What’s up, Daddy?”
“I need a favor from you two. In a few days, I’ll be going away for work. I’ll be gone for a bit, so I need you to take care of your mommy while I’m away. Can you handle that?”
“Are you going to be gone a long time?” Oliver asked.
Julian nodded, his tone easy and calm. “Yeah. But listen, your mommy’s eyes are going to get better soon. I put together a little surprise for her out back. Once her eyes heal, I want you to take her to see it. How does that sound?”
When they heard about Madeline’s recovery, both boys lit up. Oliver bounced on the bed with excitement. “Really? Mommy’s eyes are getting better? Then she’ll be able to see us again! Noah, did you hear that? She’ll really see us!”
Noah grinned, though something didn’t quite add up. “If it’s a surprise, why don’t you show it to her, Daddy?”
Julian’s face didn’t give anything away. “I want to be with her, but I have work to do. I can’t get out of it.”
