Madeline hadn’t really been sleeping. The smallest movement brought her right back. “Are we here already?”
Julian’s voice was soft. “Yeah, we’re here. Time to get off the plane. Let’s go home.”
He smiled at her and gently helped her up.
Just hearing the word “home” made Madeline’s chest feel warm. “Okay.”
Behind them, Claire walked stiffly, flanked by two bodyguards. Her eyes burned with resentment as she stared at Madeline and Julian.
All she could think about was making sure they never got what they wanted. If she was going down, she was taking everyone with her. That thought echoed again and again in her head, her glare growing sharper by the second.
As they stepped off the plane, Claire’s eyes darted to a sharp metal edge nearby. And when the bodyguards looked away for a moment, she lunged, slamming herself into it with all her strength.
One of the guards shouted in panic when she broke free.
A sickening crack, then Claire’s scream of pure agony.
The bodyguards rushed over and yanked her upright, but what they saw froze them in place. The sharp metal was jammed straight into her eye, blood pouring down her face. She started to laugh, wild and out of control, like she’d finally lost her mind. Even the bodyguards couldn’t hide their fear.
“You thought you could use my eyes to give Madeline her sight back? Dream on! I’d rather destroy myself than let you get your way!”
“Total lunatic,” muttered one of the guards, stiff with shock.
Julian heard the chaos and rushed back after settling Madeline in the car. When he saw Claire, his face iced over, dark eyes narrowing with fury.
“Boss, she…” The guard stumbled over his words, head bowed. “We lost track of her for a second, she… she did it herself. We didn’t see it coming…”
Julian grabbed Claire by the front of her shirt, glaring straight into her blood-streaked face. His teeth clenched, voice razor sharp. “You want to die that badly?”
