When his eyes landed on her, Madeline felt a familiar pang of sympathy radiating from him—a sharp, prickling tension that she could sense even without her sight.
She snuggled closer, letting her head rest against Julian’s heartbeat. The steady thump of it calmed her in a way nothing else could. Wrapped in his arms, Madeline finally let herself drift off, sleep sneaking up on her before she even realized it.
She woke up the next morning, a little confused, her hand reaching over to the space beside her. Cold sheets. No one there.
Rubbing her head, she called out softly, “Julian?”
Her first instinct now, with her eyes still bandaged, was to find him. Maybe it was because she couldn’t see. Maybe it was just because she missed him.
A nurse came in, her voice gentle. “Ms. Monroe, Mr. Grayson went to see the doctor.”
“What did the doctor want?” Madeline asked.
“Oh, it was Mr. Grayson who went looking for him,” the nurse said, smiling. “He wanted a lesson in how to change your bandages properly. I swear, he was so impatient that I thought the doctor was going to burst into tears. He’s really something.”
Madeline laughed quietly. She thought back to last night, remembering Julian saying he didn’t want anyone else to see her body. Of course he’d want to do it himself.
Shaking her head, Madeline couldn’t help but smile.
The whole morning went by without seeing Julian. She’d wanted to ask when they were heading back to the Capital, but he was nowhere to be found.
He finally returned at lunch, sitting beside her as she picked at her meal.
Madeline spoke up. “Julian, let’s go back to the Capital tomorrow. I miss Noah and Oliver. And you need to get back to work.”
He nodded. “Sure, whatever you want. What about your mom?”
“My mom will come to the Capital in a few days. Luke—well, he’s still really hurt. The doctor said he shouldn’t move around, so she’ll bring him when he’s better.”
Julian nodded again, no hesitation. “Alright, I’ll sort things out.”
