“Don’t you touch her.” Shelly’s voice was sharp, her eyes blazing. “Ray, stay away from her. I mean it.”
“Shelly, she’s your daughter. I’m not going to hurt her.” Ray’s patience was wearing thin. He couldn’t understand why she was acting so protective of Madeline.
He’d been trying to winning over Shelly for half his life, and this was the first time he’d seen her care about someone like this. At least it was just her daughter. If it were some other man, Ray wouldn’t have hesitated to make him disappear.
“I said no.” Shelly grabbed the front of Ray’s shirt, her grip tight. “Promise me you won’t lay a finger on her.”
Ray looked down at her hand, a small smile tugging at his lips instead of anger. “Alright. I promise I won’t touch her.”
Only then did Shelly let go, her shoulders relaxing just a little.
“But if I don’t keep her tied up, how are you going to see her?” Ray asked.
“Let me go. I won’t run. I just want to see her once, and then I’ll come right back,” Shelly replied, her tone icy.
“Shelly, are you really talking nice to me?” His voice was soft, almost gentle, but there was something dangerous underneath.
Shelly gritted her teeth. “Yes, I am.”
Ray’s lips curled into a slow smile.
For a split second, hope flickered in Shelly’s eyes. She hadn’t expected him to agree so easily.
Then Ray said, “We’ve known each other almost thirty years, and you’re finally learning to talk peacefully. That’s progress. But I’m sorry, Shelly. I can’t trust you anymore.”
Just like that, her expression turned cold again. “What do you want from me? What will it take for you to let me out?”
“For one, you can apologize to Alianna. Last time, you were the one who started it. You hit her, Shelly. You owe her an apology.”
Shelly stared at him, her eyes full of contempt. Alianna was the daughter of Jane, the woman who once saved Ray’s life. Out of gratitude, he’d invited Jane and her daughter to live with him. He never had children of his own, so he spoiled Alianna. The girl was clever, always calling him Dad, and Ray never corrected her.
But Jane and Alianna were both trouble. Jane, especially, had always seen Shelly as her enemy.
