Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 584

Madeline’s breath caught at the look in his eyes. When he realized it was her, the intensity faded so fast she wondered if she’d imagined it, replaced by a flicker of surprise. “You’re up early.”

She set the blanket aside and glanced at him. “Yeah. Did you sleep out here last night?”

Julian nodded, voice rough from sleep as he answered. He still hadn’t let go of her wrist. When she didn’t move to leave, he just pulled her into his lap and wrapped an arm around her waist, holding her close. “It’s still early. Why not get some more sleep?”

Madeline searched his eyes, her expression serious as she ignored his question. “Julian, what happened to you last night?”

He blinked. “What?”

“After you talked to Helene, you didn’t look right. What happened?”

His gaze darkened and for a second, he seemed far away, Helene’s words clearly haunting him. His hand tightened on her waist without him even noticing.

Madeline caught the shift in his mood and worry crept into her chest. Julian quickly pulled himself together, brushing his fingers softly over her cheek. “It’s nothing. Don’t worry about it.”

She pressed her lips together, eyes thoughtful. He was hiding something. He didn’t want to talk. And why should he? She wasn’t his wife. He didn’t owe her every answer.

After a moment, Madeline stood up, slipping from his arms. “Okay. If you’re tired, go rest in one of the other bedrooms. There’s more than one in this suite. I’ll head out first.”

She didn’t wait for him to reply. She strode straight for the door and reached for the handle. Before she could turn it, a big hand covered hers, gently but firmly pushing the door closed. The next second, Julian’s familiar scent wrapped around her as he pulled her back against his chest.

“Are you mad at me?”

“No.” She tried to pry his arm away from her waist, but he didn’t budge.

“You say you’re not, but you clearly are,” he teased, voice low.
