Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 571

Everyone went quiet, all eyes turning to Maxwell.

He stepped forward and spoke up. “Thank you for coming to the Ballard family’s banquet. I’m sorry, but there’s been an unexpected incident. This event was meant to introduce Ms. Ballard to you all, but as you can see, things have changed. I’m afraid we have to cancel the rest of the evening. The Ballard family has other matters to handle right now. Please forgive us for the inconvenience.”

“Maxwell!” Claire’s expression turned icy. “What is this supposed to mean?”

Was he really not going to announce her identity after all this?

Maxwell’s gaze was steady, unreadable. “I’m sorry, Miss. We’re now unsure about your identity. We need to look into this before we make anything official.”

“So you are saying you believing her? She’s just a fraud.”

“We’ll decide that for ourselves.”

Claire’s face twisted with anger. She stared at Maxwell for a long moment and then let out a bitter sneer. “So you really do trust that impostor. After everything I’ve put up with tonight, after all the humiliation, you’re still not on my side. Instead, you’re helping an outsider question who I am. If my mother were still alive, she’d be devastated.”

“If she were here to see her daughter act with such cruelty, she’d be heartbroken,” Maxwell replied, clearly disappointed.

He’d seen it all, the way Claire had purposely knocked over the champagne tower, acting out of pure spite.

It was hard for him to accept that someone so scheming and vicious could really be the Shelly’s child.

Claire’s chest tightened. She shot a glare at Madeline and then sneered at Maxwell. “Cruel? What about her? She set me up first. That dress was supposed to be mine and you know it. Why was she wearing it? Why is it okay for her to go after me, but I can’t defend myself?”

She sounded so sure of herself, as if she’d forgotten that everything actually belonged to Madeline from the start, and she was the one who’d taken it away.

Maxwell felt utterly drained. He waved his hand. “Let’s drop this. We’ll be investigating both your identities further.”

With reporters around, Maxwell was worried the whole mess would end up online. He needed to take care of that, so he left right away.

Madeline ignored Claire’s hateful glare and turned to Julian.

Julian still hadn’t fully recovered from what Christian had done to him earlier, and now the collapsed champagne tower had just made things worse. Madeline was worried.

He’d already taken off his jacket and was left in just a thin dress shirt.

Madeline wanted to check if he was hurt. She gently took his hand. “Come with me.”

“Where are we going?”

“I want to see if you’re okay.”

Julian caught the concern in her eyes and couldn’t help but smile. Honestly, he felt like he could take a hundred more hits if it meant seeing her worry about him.

He arranged for someone to take Lucy back to the hotel, then let Madeline pull him along.

Claire glared after them, rage burning in her chest.

Everything was ruined.
