Christian was lost in his own thoughts. Lucy had to call his name a few times before he finally snapped out of it.

“What is it?” she asked, her brow furrowed in concern.

“It’s nothing. It’s just, what you’re saying really doesn’t make sense. Claire died thirteen years ago. If she were still alive, she would have come back to us by now. There’s no way she could be Ms. Ballard. It’s just too far-fetched.”

“But…”

“You’re just overthinking it. A scar on her hand doesn’t prove anything. Sometimes people just have similar scars. It happens,” Christian said, brushing her off.

“No, Dad, listen. If it was just a coincidence, why would she try so hard to hide it from me? She knew if I saw that scar, I’d recognize her. That’s why she didn’t want me to see it.”

Lucy realized how unbelievable this all sounded. If she hadn’t seen the scar with her own eyes, if she hadn’t seen the way Ms. Ballard reacted, she wouldn’t believe it either. But now she was almost certain she was right.

Of course, to anyone else, a single scar wasn’t enough to prove anything. If Lucy went around telling people that a woman who’d supposedly died thirteen years ago had come back with a new face, all because of a scar, no one would believe her. Even Christian wasn’t convinced. That only made her more desperate.

“Please, you have to believe me. I’m telling the truth…”

“That’s enough. Stop letting your imagination run wild. You’re just like Julian, always trying to help Madeline. That’s why you are getting yourself caught up in all this nonsense.”

“I…” Lucy’s voice faltered. She didn’t know how to argue anymore.

Just then, Christian’s phone rang. He glanced at the screen, frowning, his expression turning serious. “I need to take this. This is a big deal, so don’t say anything to anyone else for now. Even if you are right, we need real evidence. Do you understand?”

He wanted to calm her down, at least for the moment.

Lucy could only nod.
