Lucy still couldn’t shake the fear from her mind. She was standing right in the Ballard family’s home, and that woman was pretending to be Ms. Ballard. With that kind of position, she had real power, and Lucy knew she couldn’t rule out the possibility of someone being sent after her.
Julian’s brow drew tight when he heard her. “Go somewhere crowded and stay put. Don’t be alone, and don’t eat or drink anything unless you’re sure it’s safe. She’s good with poison. We’ll be there as soon as we can.”
A soft chime rang out.
The elevator doors slid open on the ground floor. The lobby was already packed with guests.
Lucy breathed deeply, feeling a little lighter. She listened carefully to Julian’s words and replied, “Alright. I’ll look after myself. You two take your time and drive safe, alright?”
“We will,” Julian promised.
Madeline sat quietly next to Julian. After he hung up, the car was filled with silence, but she’d caught bits and pieces of his conversation with Lucy.
She turned to him, a bit puzzled. “Who’s Claire?”
Julian’s voice grew quiet and heavy. “She was my father’s adopted daughter. When she was fifteen, she was with him during the accident that took his life. Everyone thought she died too. But now… it looks like she might have survived.”
Madeline’s eyebrows drew together. This was the first time Julian had ever mentioned any of this.
She’d married Julian at twenty, lived in the Grayson family for three years, and no one had ever brought it up. All she’d known was that Julian’s father, Brian, died in an accident.
Claire…
She’d overheard them on the phone. Couldvyhe woman who’d gotten plastic surgery to look just like her really be Claire?
Julian immediately pulled out his phone and made a call. His voice was low and urgent. “I need you to look into someone for me. Her name is Claire…”
Suddenly, there was a loud crash.
Madeline’s heart lurched as the driver slammed on the brakes.
At that moment, a black SUV shot out of nowhere and rammed straight into the attacking car.
Madeline’s heart nearly stopped.
There was a thunderous crash. The SUV’s driver was relentless, not only stopping the black car but flooring the gas, shoving the other vehicle backward with pure force.
The driver of the black car panicked, twisting the steering wheel in a desperate bid to escape. But the SUV wasn’t letting up. It matched every move, and with another hard jolt, sent the black car crashing into the guardrail. The car skidded sideways, scraping along the metal for several yards.
Now the black car’s driver was furious and looked ready to go head-to-head, stomping on the gas and charging straight at the SUV.
But for every reckless move, there’s always someone willing to go further. The SUV’s driver was clearly all in.
Madeline watched, her nerves stretched to the breaking point, as the two cars seemed locked in a contest to see which one could take more punishment. She was so scared she flung her door open and scrambled out of the car.
Out in the open, with nothing blocking her view, everything looked even more terrifying.
