Brendan grinned. “Looks like something’s going on. What happened here?”
Maxwell chimed in, “Yeah, what’s going on?”
Claire turned to Maxwell right away. “Maxwell, we just got here too. From what we’ve heard, it was this…” She paused, stuck for a second. With both her and Madeline insisting they’re Madeline, nothing she could call her felt quite right.
After a second, she went on, “It was this Ms. Monroe, the one claiming to be Madeline, who poisoned my sister Raine. Raine’s already been taken to the hospital.”
She made it sound like she’d just shown up, but she didn’t hesitate to point the finger straight at Madeline.
Madeline could hear exactly what Claire was implying.
“That’s not how it happened,” Madeline said quickly, not about to let Claire’s accusation stick. “I didn’t poison Raine. Someone was actually trying to poison me.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed, sharp and cold.
Madeline kept going. “Raine came to see me and we got into it, but that was just a coincidence. The tea was brought for me. Why would I poison my own tea just to get to her? Does that even make sense?”
Kate jumped in, her tone cutting. “The maid said you threw teawater at Raine. Maybe you slipped the poison in before you did it, just to hurt her on purpose!”
Madeline just smiled, calm and almost amused. “If I were really that calculating, I wouldn’t waste time on Raine. I’d go for her instead.”
She looked right at Claire. “If she ended up dead, this whole real versus fake Madeline drama would be over and I’d be the one who wins. And like I said, the tea was meant for me. If I’d drunk it and died, I think everyone here knows exactly who would benefit most.”
