Twin Cupids at Work Daddy Come Home novel Chapter 535

As soon as those words left his mouth, Sam and Brendan both turned their eyes to Claire.

Brendan raised his brows. “Oh? Is that true?”

Sensing things were heading south, Claire jumped in quickly. “I had no idea she was here on your invitation. Why would you invite her? Did you forget she pretended to be me just a few days ago?”

Sam just smiled, completely unfazed. “What happened before is in the past. That doesn’t mean we can’t have her as a guest at the Ballard house, right?”

Claire clenched her jaw so hard it hurt.

These two were obviously trying to use Madeline against her.

She was so angry she almost lost her composure.

She sucked in a breath and forced a mocking smile. “Shouldn’t you be more careful? Is it really a good idea to bring someone who wants to take my place into our home?”

Brendan let out a soft laugh and lifted his hand, stopping her mid-sentence. “Let’s not jump to conclusions about who’s replacing who. We still don’t know which of you is the real one. No need to make things so final. We’re not falling for that.”

Claire’s frustration was almost tangible. “So, are you saying you’d rather take her side than mine?”

Brendan looked at her coolly. “I didn’t say that. I’m not here to pick sides. I just want to help my sister find her real daughter and make sure the Ballard family has the right heir.”

Claire cursed him in her heart. He made it sound so noble.

But it was obvious. He just wanted to pit her and Madeline against each other.

A total fox, through and through.

Brendan didn’t say another word, and Claire fell silent too.

Maxwell watched the whole scene, his gaze heavy with disappointment. He could see exactly what was going on.

Right now, everyone was watching Claire, waiting to see what she’d do next.

Claire swallowed her pride and stepped forward. There was so much emotion in her eyes, but she forced it all down.

She knew she couldn’t afford to go head-to-head with Madeline, not now.

“I’m sorry.” Claire took a shaky breath and pushed the words out. “I was reminded of what happened last time. I got worked up and said things I shouldn’t have. I apologize.”

Madeline gave her a small nod, a faint smile in her eyes. “I understand. Seeing me must have made you nervous. It’s perfectly reasonable.”

Claire’s lips twitched.

Nervous? She made it sound like Claire had something to hide.

“I wouldn’t say nervous. It’s just… seeing the same face, I can’t help but worry you’ll use it to take my place.” Claire gave a small, almost mocking smile. “So, Miss Imposter, I hope you get where I’m coming from.”
