After all that, I wonder if the one they kept is even the real one.” Brendan’s voice carried a teasing edge. He was the youngest son of Anthony, who was Shelly’s father.

The man at the top seat cracked his eyes open and gave a cold laugh. “I heard you can’t even tell them apart.”

She glanced at each of them, remembering what Maxwell had told her. The man sitting at the top on the left was her second uncle, Sam. The one who’d been the loudest just now was her third uncle, Brendan. The rest were mostly cousins.

Claire knew Sam and Brendan would be the toughest to deal with and had the most say in the family. She was well aware that taking control of the Ballard family wouldn’t be easy, not just because of Madeline, but also because of these uncooperative relatives.
