Lucy yanked her blanket up and shot Julian a look. “If you don’t come visit me, I might as well not have had you at all.”
Julian let out a sigh. “Sorry, I’ve been really busy. Every time I stopped by, you were asleep.”
“Enough, enough, both of you can leave. I’m tired of looking at you. I heard Christian brought your uncle back to put more pressure on you, so you’ve got your hands full. And you,” she said, turning to Madeline, “someone who’s obsessed with plastic surgery is after you, so watch your back. Don’t end up stabbed and in the hospital like me.”
Lucy kept muttering her half-angry, half-worried warnings.
Madeline couldn’t help smiling. There was something endearing about Lucy’s grumpy mix of scolding and fussing.
“We’ll be careful,” Madeline promised with a nod.
Lucy snuggled deeper under her blanket. “Go on, both of you. Next time, bring my grandsons. I’m tired of seeing just you.”
Some of the tension in Julian’s face finally eased. “Alright. Get some rest.”
Julian slid his arm around Madeline and quietly led her out of the room.
Madeline gently pulled the door shut behind them. Julian reached for her hand, holding it like it was the most natural thing in the world as they walked slowly toward the elevator.
She glanced down at their joined hands, then up at him. He seemed so casual about it, so comfortable. For a second, it almost felt like they really were a loving couple.
The thought made her heart skip, and her hand tensed, wanting to pull away.
Julian noticed and stopped, turning to look at her. “What’s wrong?”
Madeline quickly slipped her hand out of his and tucked it into her pocket. She pressed her lips together. “Thank you for sticking up for me in front of your mom.”
Julian met her gaze. “That’s what I’m supposed to do, isn’t it?”
Madeline’s eyes flickered. “And... thank you for helping me get bail, for buying me some time.”
He looked right at her. “Anything else?”
“Um, what?”
“If you’re going to thank me, get it all out now. Then I can ask you for something.”
She blinked in surprise, catching the hint of a smile in his eyes. “Alright, I’m done. What do you want to ask?”
