Madeline walked over and set the first aid kit down on the table. She pulled out a bottle of antiseptic and some bandages, glancing at Julian. “Where are you hurt?”

“You’re going to patch me up?” he asked, a hint of amusement in his voice.

She held up the supplies. “I already have everything ready. What do you think I’m here for?”

Julian looked at the medicine in her hands, then reached out and took it from her. “I can handle it myself.”

Madeline didn’t bother to argue. She just asked, “Where are you hurt? Can you even reach it on your own?”

Julian let out a soft chuckle. “Are you worried about me?”

“I’m just being polite,” Madeline answered, her eyes searching him for any sign of injury.

Judging by the look on Miles’s face earlier, it had to be serious, but Julian didn’t seem bothered at all. Aside from the slight weakness in his voice a moment ago, he looked completely fine.

“It’s right here. Want to see for yourself?” Julian sat down on the sofa, legs spread, looking totally at ease.

Madeline’s expression stiffened as she tried to figure out if he was joking. “Are you serious?”

Julian laughed again, then stood up and reached over to ruffle her hair. “Relax. I’m just messing with you. You should go to bed.”

He grabbed the medicine and headed into the bathroom.

She heard the bathroom door close and the sound of him undressing. Madeline didn’t bother to follow, just wandered over to pour herself a glass of water.

Seven or eight minutes passed. He still hadn’t come out. She walked to the bathroom door, hesitated a couple of seconds, then quietly pushed it open a crack.

“Madeline, are you trying to peep on me?” His voice came from inside.

Busted. Instead of playing coy, she just opened the door the rest of the way. What she saw made her freeze. Julian’s back was covered in dark, angry bruises, as if he’d been whipped.

Madeline’s hand flew to her mouth in shock. He turned to face her, and there were two ugly welts across his chest as well.

It was hard to look at.
