Julian’s eyes flickered, a hint of surprise and happiness quickly hidden behind his calm expression.
“Alright,” he said quietly.
He loosened his tie, but instead of heading straight to the study like usual, he made his way to the kids’ room.
The door was almost closed. Julian pushed it open softly and paused at the sight inside. Madeline was sitting on the rug with the boys, helping them build a Lego castle. She sat sideways, her slim waist outlined by her snug sweater dress, every movement graceful and easy.
Her hair was tied up, showing off the delicate lines of her neck and her smooth skin. From the side, her face looked almost unreal, so pretty and gentle, with a bright smile that made her eyes shine. Warm light from the ceiling spilled over her, and Julian felt his breath catch. He didn’t want to move or speak, afraid he’d ruin the cozy scene.
His heart fluttered, and he let himself sink into the peacefulness of the moment.
It all felt so perfect, so safe.
If only life could always be like this.
“Daddy!” Oliver spotted him first.
Madeline straightened up, her eyes meeting his. Her lashes trembled as she struggled to find the right words. Finally, she just said, “You’re back.”
Right after she spoke, she realized how much it sounded like a wife greeting her husband after a long day. The thought made her cheeks burn a little.
Julian didn’t seem to notice. He just smiled, his tone casual and warm. “There was a problem at work today. I had to stay and sort it out, so I came home late.”
Madeline blinked, realizing he was explaining himself to her. She just nodded, lips pressed together.
“Mrs. Grayson came to find me,” she said, breaking the silence. “She asked me to treat you.”
Julian pulled over a chair, sitting down close by. “So you said yes?”
“I don’t want the kids growing up without a father.”
Julian let out a quiet laugh. “Then I’ll thank you for them.”
Madeline didn’t reply.
At dinner, the seat next to Julian was left empty. It was clearly meant for her.
