The next day.
At the airport.
Madeline couldn’t turn her back on her two kids. No matter what had happened, she just couldn’t walk away.
As she stepped off the plane and set foot in the city again, a heavy wave of emotion washed over her. She was really back.
A white Audi pulled up in front of her. The car door flew open and a woman rushed out, eyes wide with disbelief. Tears welled up instantly.
“Madeline…”
Brenda stared at her, caught somewhere between laughter and tears. “Is it really you? Madeline, is this real?”
Madeline offered a gentle smile. “It’s me.”
Brenda burst into fresh tears and flung her arms around Madeline, holding her tight.
“It’s really you. You’re not… you’re not gone… When you called yesterday, I thought I was dreaming. You’d been missing for so long, you scared me so badly…”
Brenda was shaking, overwhelmed by relief and joy as she hugged her friend.
Madeline held her close, rubbing her back to comfort her. “I’m sorry for making you all worry. I’m back now.”
Brenda could barely stop crying. “This is just… the best news.”
Madeline helped her wipe away the tears.
Brenda took her hand and led her toward the car. “Come on, let’s talk inside.”
“What about Noah and Oliver? Do you know how they’re doing?”
Madeline’s worry for her children was obvious. She’d been unconscious for two months after falling into the sea, and she couldn’t stop thinking about how scared they must have been. She’d tried calling them yesterday, but the call didn’t go through. They were probably at school.
“They’re both staying at the Grayson house now. I only get to see them every once in a while. They seem all right on the outside, but only they know how much that hurt.”
“And Julian is not doing well either. His insomnia is worse than ever. He spends all his time working or searching for you. When you disappeared, everyone said you were gone, but Julian refused to believe it. He was ready to turn over every stone in the world if it meant finding you.”
Brenda glanced sideways at her. “Honestly, Julian was desperate. That wasn’t just for show. He’s had a rough couple of months… Now that you’re back, do you want to see him?”
Madeline pressed her lips together, uncertainty flickering in her bright eyes. “…Let’s talk about it later. I want to see Noah and Oliver first. They should be getting out of school soon.”
“Then let’s go straight there.”
